Veilfire runes convey more than the literal meaning of their text. Veilfire can transfer a tangible impression of sights, sounds, and even emotions on the reader. With diligent practice, any mage can learn this astonishing technique, but compared to the ancient elves' examples, current works are crude. I hope this book will guide those who, like myself, would rekindle an interest in this delicate art. Together, let us rediscover subtleties lost to the ages.
—From Veilfire: A Beginner's Primer with Numerous Teachings, Exercises, and Applications, by Magister Pendictus
Veilfire is a form of sympathetic magic, meaning it is never used for any form of violence.
Created in the time of the elves prior to the establishment of the Tevinter Imperium. And Although mages can only summon Veilfire (strange as that is) the source is used to examine writings and runes, even understanding inscriptions that can provoke emotions and thoughts, they go back as far as into the ancient texts like in the Temple of Mythal
Hello Thedosians and welcome back to my channel, today we are going to talk about Veilfire, a seemingly innocent fire that lies around ancient elvhen runes.
Veilfire has such little information lore-wise in Inquisition until we start using it for ancient texts and even as far as to use it in Trespasser. Veilfire has a significance to it and we must realize that it is something that was made for the extension of the Veil...
Water seems to be the only source to eliminate Veilfire, and when it dissipates, its magical properties fade.
Solas states he doesn't know too much about Veilfire, however, he does state its hidden purposes:
'It is called Veilfire, it is a form of sympathetic magic, a memory of flame that burns in this world where the Veil is thin' - Solas
-Matthew Goldman quoted an artist tweet https://twitter.com/Kafka_Sai/status/1359134648916467717 about Solas and a 'mysterious V.......' archer. Obviously, we are crazy tinfoil clowns and we have to believe/theorize that this very archer is using Veilfire to defeat a red lyrium infested darkspawn..
But because we know little of Veilfire we must look to the essence of it, known as the Veil, and how it was created with such power... And perhaps that can lead us into learning the effects of Veilfire...
The Veil is not an object − it cannot be touched or seen. It is not a physical barrier, but rather something similar to a magical vibration that repels the Fade. It is a metaphor used by mortal scholars to explain the interactions between the two different realities.
The orb is obviously theorized to have created the Veil, Solas states to the Herald that the anchor uses its magic to control part of the Breach 'as it was created deliberately'.
When you ask Solas about the Veil, he gives you a simple answer of being the barrier between the physical world and the Fade, but entirely goes over his creation by giving you the imagery of the world without the Veil "A world where imagination defines reality".
This is the problem, the very creator of the Veil does not explain his own creation, but rather leaves his creation to its simple term. Which makes it harder to define what it is. It is not a physical boundary one can see, but rather an invisible repelling wall that separates into two different worlds.
The one thing I would like to notice is the word 'repel' how can a barrier repel the magics and force of the Fade? Perhaps its magic is useful yet not defined quite yet.
Let's look back at the 'In Hushed Whispers' quest, Corypheus successfully tears down the Veil in order to enter the Black City and usurp the Maker's throne for himself. However, since we are one year into the future, the Veil was torn successfully, it doesn't seem like the Elder One entered the 'Black City' just yet. This could have been for plot mechanics, but like I said the anchor might have been the limit to Corypheus' success besides Fen'Harel...
So when we look at this world, we can consider that Solas is really the only person who can restore his people once the Veil is torn. Not only that, he solely might know how to enter the Black City that Corypheus failed to do so. And as far as the Veil goes, a lot of that barrier would need to be fully broken in order for Corypheus and Solas to succeed.
It all leans into how 'Veilfire's' magic really works besides retain emotions from murals, I'd like to believe that Veilfire is much similar to the substance from the anchor, the anchors magic was directed from Fen'harel's orb, whereas Veilfire could just be the Veil's magic itself.
I like to compare the two since, in Trespasser, we can eliminate murals with our anchor while retaining emotions from them. So much like Veilfire, Fen'Harel's orb was deliberately either linked to the Veil's power, which makes sense if we theorize Solas used that to create the Veil in the ritual.
So in this trailer, it shows an archer conjuring green-like magic drawn at this large darkspawn. Its bowstring illuminates green energy as does the arrow flung towards the dark spawn. For this to be Veilfire, it would have to be conjured by a mage to work, so if anything, this could be a bow that requires a mage/spell to be used. Or we could just be like IGN and call it green electricity.
The last thing I can theorize is the green lyrium substance described in Horror of Hormak, this seems to be unlikely since it is a sick substance that the taint holds on to, so using this magic might make the darkspawn worse than it already is.
So, are we using Veilfire to go against blighted creatures? What V-word do we think Goldman is explaining? Let me know in the comments below.
